HIGHAMS PARK: Collapsed man at Tesco site has died

The scene on Tuesday (February 7). The scene on Tuesday (February 7).

A MAN who collapsed at the building site of a new Tesco megastore died shortly afterwards, it has emerged.

The 48-year-old contractor was taken unwell on Tuesday (February 7) at around 9.45am on the site off Larkshall Road in Highams Park.

He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, according to a statement from Tesco today.

The supermarket chain said it was not the result of a building accident.

A spokesman said a sudden brain haemorrhage is the suspected cause of death.

He added: “Our sympathies go to his family. Both [construction firm] Maclaren and Tesco are doing everything they can to support them at this time.”

Work on the 24-hour supermarket and 253 adjacent flats was briefly stopped following his collapse.

The development is expected to be completed this year.

The superstore has been opposed by residents who fear it will change the character of the area and lead to disruption. The company denies the claims and say it will provide jobs and boost the local economy.
