WALTHAM FOREST: Memories of Caribbean East Enders sought by charity

THE memories of people with Caribbean roots who made east London their home in the 1950s are being sought.

The African Heritage Educational Centre wants such people to share their recollections of how the East End looked 60 years ago.

And former Waltham Forest councillor Lord Paul Boateng backed the charity’s call for people to get in touch.

Lord Boateng, who was born in Hackney in 1951 of mixed Ghanaian and Scottish descent, encouraged people to come forward to help the charity create a living record of this age in east London in time for the arrival of the Olympic Games.

He has already been interviewed, a longside Hackney North MP Diane Abbott and Olympic 400 metres champion Christine Ohurougu, who grew up in Stratford.

The charity works to promote positive images of African heritage and culture.

The charity can be contacted on 020 8558 6811 or by emailing info@ahec.org.uk. It is also looking for volunteers to get involved with the project.
