We are now less than 100 days away from the elections for Members of the European Parliament. These elections really matter for our future prosperity. If UKIP does well, as many are predicting, the message sent to businesses and investors would be that Britain wants 'out' of the EU.
That would be a disaster, not only for the country as a whole but - especially - right here in London.
Mayor local employers like Ford and Siemens, which provide thousands of jobs across London, have said being in the EU is vital for their business as it guarantees their access to the European Single Market. And a recent survey of business leaders found that up to 6% of local firms could fold altogether if we left the EU, putting 300,000 jobs in London at risk.
With the Conservatives openly flirting with exit, and Labour running scared of the debate, only the Liberal Democrats are prepared to take on UKIP and keep Britain IN Europe.
So don’t wait for a referendum or the general election. Use the Euro-elections on 22nd May to say you are ‘IN’ – for the sake of British business, trade and influence in the world, and thus for British jobs.
Sarah Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP
