The God that the Reverend conjures up is a strange figure (Guardian, February 27). Angered by the behaviour of humanity he or she unleashes climate change to punish us all. The Reverend's analysis seems to come from the same school as the UKIP man who blamed the floods on gay marriage. Extraordinary in so many ways.

Where I would have some agreement though is that it has been the abuse of the climate by human kind that has caused climate change. We have been given a beautifully balanced natural system, where all can live in peace and harmony together if only respect is shown for the whole ecosystem and those who live within its confines.

Where things have gone wrong is with the consumer market capitalist system that has developed. This operates by the law of the jungle, dog eat dog and to hell with your neighbour. Indeed, status in this society is often awarded according to just how materially destructive any one person can be to the planet.

There can be little doubt that it has been this kind of avaracious living that has brought us climate change and so many other woes. To save the planet, we undoubtedly need to live more simply with a greater respect for our neighbour and a lighter step on the earth. This approach would no doubt be agreeable to any supreme being of whichever calling.
