If (Epping Forest MP) Eleanor Laing would like to do something really positive for her constituents, she should instigate an urgent inquiry into the mayhem that goes under the name of Royal Mail.

I have just had the bailiffs threatening to force entry into my flat because of an unpaid gas bill.

I got in touch with my supplier, explaining that it remained unpaid because I had not received any gas bills.

‘Well, we sent them’, came the disbelieving reply.

So I said if they sent a current bill, it would be paid immediately.

Nothing came. Now I’ve got the bailiffs making demands over the phone and adding additional costs.

I phoned my supplier again and during my conversa- tion with them I was informed that many people had been onto them saying that they hadn’t received their gas bills either.

So where are all the letters going if they are not being delivered?

Are the Royal Mail having ceremonial fires in the dark of night or dumping them at sea?

They have to be going somewhere.

As a test, I posted two letters to myself first class.

A week has gone by and I’m still waiting for them.

Once upon a time, we had a postal service that was the envy of the world.

Now, it’s a shambles and as reliable as a bike with no chain.

We need an investigation and we need it now.
