I would like to pay tribute to the London Borough of Redbridge, and in particular their parks department, for the manner in which they have responded to the destruction of a 'tree of remembrance' planted on Christchurch Green, Wanstead, featured in the Guardian in January.

I am pleased to say that a replacement tree has now been planted for the pleasure and enjoyment of Wanstead residents and its visitors. Having lived in the Wanstead area for the last 40 years I have had the good fortune to enjoy the commitment of successive councils in keeping the borough a pleasant place to live, work and relax.

In particular I am very impressed with their ongoing rolling tree planting programme, as I am sure are other residents. Their ethos is supported by the Epping Forest conservators, many associations and individuals, and with regard to Wanstead the sterling work of the Wanstead Society.

Through their combined efforts and those of your newspaper the borough remains a part of our 'green and pleasant land', and the image of Wanstead Village remains for the residents and visitors to enjoy.

Unfortunately, every community has its share of weak, mindless cowards, who seem to be unable to enjoy that image or care for others feelings. It is for us, the huge body of caring residents and visitors to stand up to these sad individuals. With the enormous pressure on the resources of the police service, it is for us to be the eyes and ears to protect our borough.

If we become aware of any evidence of anti-social behaviour, or criminal activity we should report it. The contact number of the Snaresbrook Safer Neighborhood Unit is 0208 721 2561. We can only feel sorry for these few odd individuals who seem to be unable to enjoy their surroundings, but if they cannot conduct themselves in a lawful, caring manner they need to be punished. If that is what it takes to maintain our 'green and pleasant land' so be it.

Kenneth Smith, Wanstead
