I’m feeling pain inside my soul; Another pub has bit the dust.

Our community now less than whole, Destroyed for profit – it’s a must.

The Winston Churchill, famed in war Is now the victim of a blitz.

Was unprotected by our ‘law’ The spivs have won – now mega rich.

O’er many years they’ve warred with us And robbed us of our social gains.

Youth clubs closed with little fuss, Our kids brainwashed with virtual games.

Our cinema closed many years ago, Difficult now to see a film.

Buffs traipse many miles for one show, ‘But you’ve got TV’ is their hymn.

Schools have sold their playing fields green And sports downgraded – where’s the breadth Of education that has been?

Speculators gain with wily stealth.

Our community centre, now long gone Was Loughton Hall of national fame.

The Tories sold it for a song Now and old people’s home run for gain.

No late night cafes or coffee bars, Inexpensive havens for our youth.

The profit margins too small by far.

Our youth grows stressed and that’s the truth.

It’s now high summer – where to cool, In river’s flow, in lakes so blessed?

No! By-laws state ‘not in this pool’ Required a lido – we behest.

Us oldies groan and scribble lines, Encouraging youth to fight their fights For a future bright that will enshrine A new generation of social rights.

My plea to all, both young and old, Let’s act in passion and be bold.

Inspirational leaders have shown the way – Folk club and film society shine a ray.
