Transport for London are seeking views on new river crossings, including the option to build a road bridge linking Beckton and Thamesmead at Gallions Reach.
This is unwelcome news for local people on both sides of the river who have been opposing plans like this for over 30 years.
The fact is that a huge new bridge will channel considerable new traffic into the area, cause gridlock and pollute the streets of east London.
This is the last thing we need in an area which already has the worst air quality in Europe.
Over 4,000 deaths are caused each year in London by harmful emissions and we need to get vehicles off our streets and invest in making public transport and cycling more appealing, not make things worse by building new roads.
I urge all Londoners to send a clear message to TfL – new roads are not the answer.
