For too many parents and children, the start of the school term provides a relief for household budgets and the prospect of nutritious food after a summer of shortage.

The Trussell Trust, which runs a network of food banks across the UK, reported an increase in demand from families during the summer holidays.

Their research shows that one in eight children are not being fed enough during the school holidays and almost a third of parents experience an extra burden on their already tight food budgets.

It is shameful that one of the richest economies in the world leaves children with hunger and poverty.

We need a return to the ambitious child poverty reduction plan that was in place under the last government.

In the meantime, we can all help by donating to local food banks.

Many places of worship and supermarkets, like Barkingside Tesco, have collection points.

We can all do our bit to combat childhood hunger.
