Epping Forest District Council has once again launched its appeal to find the district’s citizens of the year. Culminating in an awards ceremony in February, it is one of the highlights of the civic calendar. Every year we are humbled by examples of selfless individuals in our community who demonstrate outstanding commitment by helping others, without desire for reward or praise. In an age of celebrity worship, when sadly that is all many youngsters aspire to, it is particularly refreshing to see so many examples of young people putting others before themselves. Last year’s winner of the Young Citizen of the Year category, James Lingfield, on accepting the award, modestly suggested his friends were far more inspirational than him. We look forward in this newspaper to celebrating the worthy winners early next year.
