An exotic Israeli martial art that can be picked up in five minutes is being taught in a pub’s back room – and female participants are wanted.

Rhèal Ramlakhan, 33, of Monoux Grove, Walthamstow, is a qualified Kapap instructor and has been plying his trade in Ye Olde Rose and Crown’s Red Room for two months where he offers a mixed gender class.

But Mr Ramlakhan, who has lived in Walthamstow since he was six, said living in a city today meant being prepared for potentially dangerous situations was crucial and it is something women should know.

When asked if, in this day and age, women should know self defence he said: “Most certainly. I think in any day and age having a basic idea of how to defend yourself physically, if you have to, or how to de-escalate a situation and see problems before they become an issue is vital, especially in a city.

“It doesn’t hurt to be prepared just in case.”

The level four Kapap instructor, one of only around five in Europe, launched women’s only classes two weeks ago to help introduce women to the activity which also enhances fitness and coordination.

Kapap, similar to Krav Maga, is, according to Ramlakhan, self-protection rather than self-defence, because it is real life scenario-based and concentrates on facilitating escape from dangerous situations.

He said: “It’s not a traditional martial art but more reality-based tuition.

“Joining in is as easy as walking in off the street, we wear street clothes and at a beginner level it’s about keeping it simple and safe.

“We strive to be able to teach the basic techniques in five minutes.”

Mr Ramlakhan said the Rose and Crown, being a theatre pub, had a nice vibe and when he decided to branch off and teach classes closer to home the pub offered him that opportunity.

He added: “The pub has that easy atmosphere where you can do something different and it won’t be seen in the wrong light.”

Women’s sessions, which cost £5, run each Saturday at 12.30pm, followed by a mixed class at 1.30pm and an advanced class, which is suitable for those with experience in other martial arts, at 2.30pm.
