Children across Waltham Forest are being given a chance to get hands on with nature under a scheme launched by the Lea Valley Region Park Authority.

The ‘Power of Plants’ programme has been designed to reflect changes in the primary science National Curriculum to help students understand plant parts in more detail.

Pupils from Walthamstow Montessori School were the first to explore the wilds of WaterWorks Centre nature reserve, last Friday.

Children took on a series of challenges inspired by the plant hunters of the Victorian era including constructing food chains, observational drawings and identifying Lee Valley’s top ten common plants using a basic classification key.

Natalie Gilbert, Walthamstow Montessori School Teacher said: “The children were really interested in looking at the details of plants and finding different stems, leaves and flowers. The way the activity was set up encouraged this enthusiasm.

“It was lovely to see them so involved.”

The Key Stage 2 Power of Plants educational programme is offered by Lee Valley Regional Park’s Youth and Schools service.
