Three names are set to be added to the Loughton War Memorial.

The names of a Warrant Officer, Pilot Officer and a 2nd Lieutenant will be added to the memorial on Kings Green in Loughton, later this month.

Plaques with the names of Warrant Officer Harold James Bassingthwaite who died in 1945, Pilot Officer Gerald Frank Russell Cooke, 1942, and 2nd Lieutenant Harold Johnson Martin who died in 1942, are set to be added following requests from their families.

Once the plaques have been installed, members of the public will be invited to an opening ceremony.

Loughton Town Clerk, Enid Walsh, said: "There are many possible reasons as to why these names were not originally commemorated on the Kings Green War Memorial.

"They may have been born in Loughton but moved away before the war, the family may have simply not want them remembered in this way or they may already have been commemorated on a church memorial and the family felt this was sufficient.

"With the passage of time we will now never know the reason.

"Where the evidence confirms their strong Loughton connection and the family are supportive, we are pleased to ensure their service to the country is not forgotten by their community."
