A gruelling race through Epping Forest saw competitors tackle routes by bike or foot as they raised money for charity earlier this month.

The fourth annual Helm’s Deep Duathlon started and finished in Chigwell on July 11, with 19 keen amateur athletes running and cycling to Epping and back, as well as through Hainault Forest.

The event raised funds for Muscular Dystrophy UK, a charity that supports people affected by more than 60 rare muscle weakening conditions.

Organiser Matthew Innocent said: “The event was a huge success, leaving a few of us a little sore on Sunday.

“Participants are looking forward to next year already and hopefully with the help of Chigwell School, we may be able to expand entry and turn the duathlon into a triathlon”
