People in Epping Forest have been urged to register ahead of “momentous” votes in nationwide referendums and local elections.
With a vote on EU membership expected either next year or 2017, Epping Forest District Council has encouraged and reminded people to register to have their say.
Forms have been delivered to homes since July 13, with a return of 50 per cent in the first week, but the council is now trying to ensure the remainder also sign up.
Registration can be done online, by text, phone or by post.
Councillor John Philip, responsible for the electoral register, said: “As a country, it is one of the biggest decisions we are ever likely to make.
“In or out, it will set the political and economic course of the nation for decades to come.
“Whether the vote is in 2016 or 2017 now is the time to register to vote.”
With other upcoming votes including the appointment of the next Police and Crime Commissioner in 2016 and European Parliament elections in 2019, cllr. Philip said it is important as many people as possible are registered.
He said: “Whatever the political landscape looks like by the next general election in 2020, we do know that the next few years are likely to be momentous and everyone should have their say.”
