People have been urged to take part in a public consultation on the future of Essex Fire and Rescue Service while they have the chance.

Closing on September 6, the service’s “Integrated Risk Management” consultation gives people a say on the key issues of the next five years.

With a decreasing number of incidents and a possible need to focus more on prevention and protection techniques, the consultation also considers response times, investment in technology and proposals to ensure a working smoke alarm in every home in Essex.

An online survey allows people to comment on eight key points from the consultation document, possibly helping to shape policy.

Acting chief fire officer Adam Eckley said: “This consultation will help us set the direction for the future of the service so we want to hear from as many people as possible have a say in that future.

“We will always have a strong response element but the best way we can save lives, prevent injury and reduce risk is by stopping fires and other incidents from happening in the first place.

“We carry out a great deal of prevention and safety work and over the last 10 years we have seen that work driving down incidents in the county by more than half.”
