An MP has pledged her support to an innovative project which gives teenagers the chance to express their creativity and entrepreneurial flair.

Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, gave her full backing the ‘Teenage Markets’ scheme – a space for youngsters to engage with the community.

The programme started in Stockport and has proved very successful. Now a team of residents, societies and high street traders led by Bob Burstow are campaigning to bring it to High Barnet.

Through a crowdfunding page, the group has raised almost £43,000 – including a £30,000 pledge from the Mayor of London and £5,000 from Barnet and Southgate College – in their bid to reach a goal of £55,564 by September 25.

Ms Villiers has encouraged everyone to get behind the crowdfunding effort as she believes the project would greatly benefit everyone in the area.

“This could be a real boost for our much-loved local market in Barnet. It has been part of our community in High Barnet for hundreds of years but it has been going through some difficult times.

“The Teenage Markets bid could reinvigorate our market, support to our local high street and provide great opportunities for young people to learn business experience and show off their creative abilities,” she said.

“I congratulate Bob Burstow and his team on gathering so much support and momentum.

“I would encourage everyone to get behind this project and visit the Teenage Market Spacehive page to pledge support. Time is running out.”
