A volunteer who decided to help children play football after breaking his collar bone has won the volunteer of the year award.

Adrian Klemens, of Mill Hill, won the title at the London Sport Awards 2018, hosted at the London Sports Awards hosted at Club Wembley.

The 42-year-old was nominated by a colleague, Peter Keleher, from Dynamic Sports Academy, an organisation Mr Klemens founded in 2007.

There he educates thousands of Londoners about strength and speed training, nutrition and sports psychology.

Mr Klemens said: “I’m extremely grateful and humbled to receive this award especially against such a high calibre of nominees.

"I need to thank my superstar wife who supports me endlessly and carries the load at home raising our three children when I am out coaching.”

Mr Klemens, who is originally from Melbourne, Australia, and is Project Manager in an asset management company, has a long history with American football.

Seeing his first game when he was seven, he was once scouted to play the game in America.

Mr Klemens unfortunately broke his collar bone forcing him to stop playing, in 1998 he came to Britain to work and pursue his interest in music and after seeing an ad for American football coaches began teaching the sport to Londoners.

Now in his 20th year of coaching the London Blitz American Football Club.

Since 2007 he has been coaching the Under 19 team who are now the most successful team in UK history by winning 5 of the last 7 National Championships.

Mr Klemens also is involved with the Finsbury Park Sports Partnership, formed in 2012.

Local council funding cuts forced the facility to close. However, Mr Klemens and his colleagues set up a charity to take on a lease from the council to run the facility.

Since then they have raised £1million in funding and upgraded the gym, completely rejuvenating the facility for the local communities.

Mr Klemens said: “I hope this highlights the amazing work my organisations do and assists in their promotion and growth. I need to thank my fellow coaches and staff as I don’t do any of this alone.”
