A campaign by pro-EU campaigners in Barnet to give the public a final say on the terms of Brexit has stepped up a gear.

Members of Chipping Barnet for Europe (CB4EU) have written to more than 280 Peers currently debating the EU Withdrawal Bill in the House of Lords calling for a referendum on the final Brexit deal.

The bill was passed by the House of Commons on September 12 with a majority of 36 votes.

CB4EU co-chair Vicki Harris said the group had received “a hugely encouraging response from all sides of the House [of Lords]”.

Remain won a majority of more than 20,000 votes in Barnet, while the UK as a whole opted to leave the EU.

But as politicians have struggled to come up with a coherent plan for Brexit, the campaign to give the public a say on the final deal has grown stronger.

Lord Foulkes of Cumnock, a Labour Peer whose mother was once principal nursing officer in Barnet, said: “I warmly welcome the great campaign being conducted by Chipping Barnet for Europe to help save us from the looming disaster that is Brexit.

“It is one of a growing number of local action groups around the country which I believe could halt a policy that would involve economic misery and increasing isolation.”

Baroness Altmann, a Conservative Peer, said: “I completely agree with you! I wish more people could understand that democracy does not stay frozen in time. If what people voted for cannot be delivered, then we have to see what they want in light of new information.

“People voted to be better off, have lots more money for the NHS, have lower immigration, exact same benefits, not change to the Irish Border, new free trade deals on top of our old ones.”

As well as lobbying parliament, CB4EU has also written to local MP Theresa Villiers asking for a meeting to discuss the way the Brexit negotiations are being handled.
