The father of a disabled boy says his life has nearly been destroyed by the lack of support from his housing association.

Nebojsa Jankovic, who lives in Deansbrook, Edgware, claims Barnet Homes has ignored his pleas to adapt his house to make it more disabled-friendly.

His son Jovan, 11, has Edwards Syndrome, a rare and serious genetic disorder that can even be fatal.

It is rare for children with the condition to live beyond their first few years, and although Jovan is now 11 he is severely disabled.

Mr Jankovic said: “We are desperate, my boy needs help.

“I can’t as a father provide for my own son.

“I asked Barnet Homes to come in and see for themselves whether this is a fit state for my son, but they refused.”

The couple have lived in the house since Jovan was six.

Now 11, he struggles to get to the toilet and has to be carried to the bath.

They want to make the living room of the house smaller so it is more accessible for Jovan, with a downstairs bathroom.

But Barnet Homes rejected their requests due to fears over sewage pipes below the house.

Hendon MP Mathew Offord has written to Barnet Homes on behalf of Mr Jankovic for better home facilities, as well as teachers and occupational therapists.

The stress has resulted in a serious depression for Mr Jankovic and affected his partner's health.

Mr Jankovic, 43, said: “Now they have just left us here.

“She has to stay at home and look after him, it’s been really tough on her.

“She has to carry him up and down the stairs when I’m away.

“My partner says that she is done.”

In response, Barnet Homes said: “Reasonable preference is given to people with high levels of assessed housing needs.

“In this case it relates to ‘people who have a need to move on medical or welfare grounds, including grounds relating to a disability’.

“Properties which are adapted or suitable for adaption are allocated to those with substantial disabilities or other support needs.

“If a tenant refuses a reasonable offer of a suitable property and major adaptations to the existing property are not feasible, our adaptations team makes every effort to carry out minor adaptations to support the tenant or their family member.”
