A new mayor and committee chairmen will be appointed when Barnet Council meets for the first time since local elections this week.

The new mayor is expected to be confirmed as Conservative councillor for Golders Green Reuben Thompstone, with Totteridge councillor Caroline Stock serving as his deputy.

It follows the departure of councillor Brian Salinger, who served as mayor of Barnet since May 2017 after 31 years as a Barnet councillor.

Elected in 2010, Cllr Thompstone has chaired the children, education, libraries and safeguarding committee, Barnet Children’s Trust Board and the corporate parenting advisory panel.

The appointments will be confirmed at the full council meeting on Tuesday, where the leader and deputy leader will also be appointed.

Cllr Richard Cornelius, who led the Conservative group to victory in May’s local elections, is expected to continue in his post as leader, with Cllr Dan Thomas serving as his deputy.

The council will also appoint the members, chairman and vice chairman to its committees, including policy and resources, and children, education and safeguarding.

Also up for debate is a report by the constitution, ethics and probity committee, which recommends simplifying the council’s constitution.

The council’s annual general meeting will take place at Hendon Town Hall on Tuesday, May 22, beginning at 7pm.
