Woodford Under-14s beat a Braintree side two divisions above them in the Essex League in impressive fashion 41-10 last weekend.

Two tries apiece from Jamie Ali and Will Carey plus single scores from man-of-the-match Rhys Phillips, Anthony Hamilton and Jed West contributed to a comprehensive victory.

Woodford went ahead when Hamilton’s strong run and pass played in Ali to score on the left-hand side and West duly converted.

On 16 minutes, Phillips went over for a converted try following a good passing move between Ali, Euan Fay and West.

Four minutes later, Braintree responded by scoring an unconverted try to make it 14-5 going into half-time.

Woodford started the second half impressively though, with Hamilton outpacing the defence on the right wing two minutes after the restart to claim an unconverted score.

Ali was the next to show off his pace when he went over for his second try of the game, which West converted for the third and final time as Woodford took even greater control of the game.

West followed up his kicking efforts with a try in the 39th minute and three minutes later, Harris Sohoye’s well-executed pass was caught by Carey, who crossed the line.

Carey scored again in the 46th minute following good work by Sohoye and Hamilton before Braintree went over for a late, unconverted consolation try at the death.

Coach Charles Wallace said: “Last season we lost twice to Braintree.

“This was an important game to test the boys and they came through with flying colours.”
