Two members of Woodford Golf Club were presented with lifetime achievement awards on Friday.

John Peters, captain in 1986 and in the centenary year of 1990, was presented with a silver salver in recognition of his attaining the highest golfing honour in Essex and north east London – the presidency of the Essex Golf Union.

Current captain John Michael Wade handed an engraved wine decanter to Stuart Runciman after he retired from his post as head greenkeeper. Runciman had been at the Woodford club since 1970.

The ladies’ captain, Irene Dupree, presented Runciman an honorary club member with an engraved ballpoint pen.

On the course on Saturday, novice John Beecroft won the ‘Easter Eggs’ competition.

Beecroft only took up golf a year ago and plays off the maximum 28 handicap. He amassed 46 stableford points to finish top. Second was Kevin Williamson on 43 points while Nick Rowe was third.

Meanwhile, the club’s former captain Michael Jones has been appointed competition secretary.

Jones, from South Woodford, was the club’s chief in 2006 and his new role involves him collating all the scores in competitions and organising the handicapping system.

Jones previously spent 19 years as the fixtures secretary of the Essex Cricket League.
