Woodford Wells Table-Tennis Club hosted the West Essex divisional cup finals as Mossford A were victorious in the climax of Division One.

Mossford were up against Langdon A, who won the opening doubles when Luca Mariano and Klaudia Szadkowska beat Matt Spero and Bartek Kazmierczak.

Mossford fought back in the first singles though, when Kamil Hajdrych beat Darek Zurowski and then took command to win the next four matches for an overall 5-1 victory.

The closest match was when Mossford’s Spero defeated Zurowski 9-11, 11-8, 12-14, 11-6, 12-10.

In the Division Two final, Westdene B won the opening doubles 16-14, 15-13, 8-11, 11-8 when Keith Hawkins and John Daniels beat Martin Marcus and Dennis Sweeney of Woodford Wells C.

The first singles was a close match, which went to a fifth and deciding game, but Bruce Hay of Westdene beat Ray Brown 6-11, 14-12, 12-14, 11-9, 11-9.

Wells C, the divisional champions, were now in trouble as Westdene led 2-0 but the next five matches were all won by Wells in three straight games.

Marcus began by defeating Daniels, Sweeney then beat an exhausted Hay, Brown beat Hawkins, Brown and Marcus defeated Hawkins and Hay in the doubles and finally Sweeney beat Daniels to give Wells a 5-2 overall victory.

In the Division Three final, the Mossford E trio of Ben Marks, Vikash Seth and John Spero proved too strong for Neil McKenzie, George Blackmore and Bob Moir of Westdene E, winning 7-1.

The closest match was when Spero beat Moir 14-12, 9-11, 12-10, 12-10.

The overall result was already determined before George Blackmore gained Westdene’s only victory by defeating Marks 12-10, 9-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-5.
