Russell Slade insists there is even more to come from Shaun Batt after the striker signed a two-year deal at the club.

Leyton Orient pulled off the transfer coup after the former Millwall forward left the Championship side last week.

Batt, who spent most of the second half of last season on loan with the O’s, was offered a new deal under former Lions boss Kenny Jackett. But his departure and the arrival of successor Steve Lomas changed the circumstances and the 26-year-old has opted to rejoin Orient, despite interest from other clubs, on a permanent contract.

Orient boss Slade said: “We were disappointed when Shaun was recalled back to Millwall because he played a big part in our good form in the second half of the season. We’re delighted to get him back here on a full-time deal.

“He was offered a contract by Kenny Jackett but when the new manager came in then it was a bit up in the air.

“It was basically agreed if another club came in for him that he could leave. Preston and Notts County made him good, firm offers. I think it goes to show that Leyton Orient can be a good place for him.

“He enjoyed his football here and did well at Millwall when he went back later in the season. With a good pre-season behind him, I think there is even more to come from Shaun.”

The deal attracted plenty of attention in the social media world after chairman Barry Hearn used Twitter to persuade Batt into returning to Brisbane Road.

Hearn tweeted the striker: “Worth talking to us? Big plans for next season. London club. Plus we actually want you!”

Slade insisted this was not likely to be a regular transfer policy but believes Hearn played an influential part in enticing Batt back.

The manager said: “He [Hearn] did have a role but I think it was a one-off. The important thing is he was in dialogue with me, and Shaun knows we are delighted to have him on board.”

Batt made 13 appearances on loan with the O’s, scoring three goals last season. His versatility is another asset with the powerful forward capable of switching to the wing.

Slade added: “The positive side is I like him as a striker and plan to play him there, but with a small squad he may have to shift on to the side which we know he can do comfortably as he demonstrated with us.”

Orient have also secured the future of two key players next season after Romain Vincelot and David Mooney signed new contracts.

French midfielder Vincelot has penned a three-year deal after making a big impression as a short-term signing last year. Irish striker Mooney followed suit by agreeing to stay for another two years.

Reflecting on keeping Vincelot, Slade said: “I think he is a very important signing for us and he really moves us forward. He is a really good type who is reliable and consistent.

“We want him to predominantly play as a midfielder, but the fact that he is versatile and can play in defence is a bonus.

“It has taken a bit of time to complete the signing and get it over the line. But because he came from the Championship [Brighton], if there was a club from that division which made an offer, it could have been a very different story. But in terms of clubs interested from League One we had a very strong hand and so it proved.”

The Orient boss thinks Mooney will be able to offer a strong partnership in attack alongside either Kevin Lisbie or Batt.

“It is more good news for us,” Slade said.

“He was injured during the end of last year but by and large he had a good season and he has a lot to offer us.

“I think the beauty of the three of them [strikers] is they can all play with one another. I think David Mooney will be very comfortable with Shaun.

“I’m also sure Kevin and Batt will form a good partership so they will all compliment each other.”

The other recent addition to the squad is teenage goalkeeper Jake Larkins who has signed on a free transfer from West Ham United.

Slade said: “You never know when these young goalkeepers come in and have not been subjected to a lot of first-team training and exposure. But I think that we have got ourselves another talented young keeper.”

Striker Michael Symes is understood to be close to a move to Burton Albion, while midfielder Anthony Griffith could make a permanent return to Port Vale. The O’s boss will be looking to replace the pair if he manages to offload them this summer.

He said: “In an ideal word I am still looking for a fourth striker but it may well be a younger one. If Anthony goes this summer then I will be looking for another senior midfielder to come in.”
