Spurs have overtaken Premier League rivals Liverpool as the favourites to sign Anzhi Makhachkala’s attacking midfielder Willian.
Liverpool had agreed to meet Anzhi’s asking price of £28m for the attacking midfielder, but Spurs have now joined the chase for the 5ft 7in midfielder, who is keen on a move to England.
The 25 year-old only joined Anzhi from Shakhtar Donetsk for €35m in January, with Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy believed to have been chasing the Brazilian before his move to Russia.
A full Brazilian international, Willian started his professional career with Corinthians before spending six trophy-laden seasons with Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar, winning four league titles as well as the 2008 UEFA Cup.
Anzhi owner Suleyman Kerimov has put the club’s entire first-team squad up for sale after deciding he no longer wants to bankroll the Russian club.
