Waltham Abbey off the mark against Romford
6:04pm Thursday 22nd August 2013 in Sport
Waltham Abbey got their first points of the season on Saturday as they won 2-0 at Romford.
After a strong start to the game from Abbey, Tom Bruno opened the scoring with a strike from distance.
Romford had two penalty appeals turned down after the break before Abbey were awarded a spot-kick of their own – James Plagzan missing from 12 yards.
The decisive second came with 11 minutes remaining, a fast counter-attack ending with Darelle Russell scoring.
Saturday’s success could not be followed up on Tuesday, however, as Abbey went down 3-1 to table-toppers VCD Athletic at home.
Goals from VCD’s James Duckworth, Stephen Okoh and Sherwin Stanley secured a comfortable victory for the Kent outfit, leaving Abbey third bottom.
Redbridge were also victorious on Saturday, beating Soham Town 3-0 at home thanks to a Leslie Thompson brace.
Damage to one of the goals caused kick-off to be delayed, but Thompson opened the scoring just four minutes in.
That lead was doubled before half-time when Thompson powered home from 25 yards before Emiel Aiken scored in contentious fashion, heading against the underside of the bar only for the linesman to award a goal.
Redbridge were unfortunate not to build on Saturday’s win, losing 1-0 at Needham Market on Tuesday thanks to an 80th-minute strike from former Colchester United striker Jamie Guy.
The Redbridge cause was not helped by the sending off of defender Hussainou Jaffa.
Waltham Forest were beaten again on Saturday, continuing their winless and goalless start to the season with a 3-0 defeat at AFC Sudbury.
Sudbury took the lead five minutes after the break, Jamie Forshaw drilling home an effort from the edge of the penalty area.
With 18 minutes remaining Dave Cowley burst out of a challenge with the ball to add a second for Sudbury.
Forshaw then added his second with four minutes to play – his third in two starts – shortly after having an earlier goal disallowed.
Forest hosted Wroxham last night (Wednesday).
