An improved performance saw Eton Manor beat newly-promoted Tabard 32-12 on Saturday in London 1 North.
Injuries meant new recruit Stephen Ross came into the starting line-up along with Nick Stewart, a product of Manor’s youth teams.
Manor piled on the pressure early on and were 7-0 up within five minutes as Garth Tucker touched down from a strong forward drive and Mark Woollard converted.
Tabard came back strong but missed a penalty, while aggressive tackling from Manor’s Callum McKie and Alex Hunter made sure the home side would not break through.
It was Manor who added the next points as Woollard kicked through the posts to lead 10-0 after the opposition infringed at the breakdown.
The home side continued to press and eventually broke through for their first try which, with the conversion, put Tabard back in the game. The score remained 10-7 until half-time.
Early in the second period, Manor extended their lead however. With captain Tryson Goodchild leading from the front, ably assisted by his front row partners Dave Dennis and Damien Horton, the visitors took the ball close to Tabard’s line.
The ball was recycled along the line to Chris Jones who beat his opponent and crossed the line for Manor’s second try of the encounter.
Wollard increased the visitors’ lead to 18-7 with a penalty before the hour mark and it was Woollard who was next to cross the line too after good work from Hunter.
Manor were now in control of the game and didn’t have to wait long for another try as Reece Reed took advantage of a lucky ricochet to collect the ball and offload to Tucker, who went over for the bonus-point score.
Woollard’s conversion made it 32-7 and while there was still time for another Tabard score late on, the result was settled.
Manor, now third in the table, entertain another of the newly promoted teams North Walsham on Saturday.
