Waltham Abbey are out of the Robert Dyas League Cup after throwing away a two-goal lead to lose 4-3 to Cheshunt on Tuesday night.

The Abbotts will wonder how they failed to win a game which they led 2-0 in the first half and 3-2 with 20 minutes to play.

The home side got off to a dream start as Loren Maxwell put Abbey in front after just four minutes and three minutes later Joe Pearman doubled the advantage.

Cheshunt hit back however, as two goals from Josh Cooper drew the visitors level on the half-hour but Pearman scored his second of the game in the 58th minute to put Abbey in command again.

There was still late drama to be had however as Cheshunt’s Luke Marshall made it 3-3 and, with  eight minutes left, Allen Bossman broke Abbey's hearts with the winner.

The defeat caps a disappointing few days for the Abbotts who were thrashed 4-1 at Soham Town Rangers in the league on Saturday.

Rangers are 14th and a place below Abbey in the table but deserved their victory as three second-half goals proved decisive.

Darrelle Russell put Abbey ahead after 11 minutes but goals from George Darling, Christopher Lindsey (two) and Michael Simpson sealed victory for Rangers.

Abbey are at home to Needham Market on Saturday.
