Leyton Orient manager Russell Slade called for the Swindon Town supporter who tried to assault goalkeeper Jamie Jones to be banned for life and says it was the worst incident he'd ever seen as a manager.

Orient won the game 3-1 to go back to the top of League One but any satisfaction from the result was soured as just after the hour-mark, a fan entered the pitch from the stand behind the goal, approached Jones and tried to land three punches on the O's stopper.

"It's a great win but it was clouded in my opinion really by the fan coming on the pitch and throwing three punches at my goalkeeper," Slade said.

"I mean that's absolutely outrageous, that's the worst scene I've seen since I've been a manager at my football club, that's an unbelievable scene.

"He's okay, but I mean it doesn't make it right does it, that he's okay? I mean, it's outrageous. The supporter, he needs a ban for life, he should never go to another football match."

The O's boss said he would speak to the Leyton Orient chief executive Matt Porter about the possibility of taking further action.

Slade added: "I'll have to speak to my own chief executive and see what the situation is because in all the years I've been in football - I've witnessed one scene like that a long, long time ago - but that's the worst I've seen in my time as a manager."

The fan ran on to the pitch as players argued over a Swindon penalty appeal which the referee had turned down.

On seeing the fan trying to assault Jones, players from both teams moved quickly to intervene as stewards escorted the supporter away.

Slade appeared to question the speed with which the stewards reacted. When it was pointed out to him that it seemed to take a long time before the fan was intercepted, Slade said, "Just a little bit."

The Guardian Series tried to speak to Jones after the match but Leyton Orient wish to make an official statement before the O's keeper is allowed to be interviewed.

Jones was able to finish the game as Orient bounced back from a defeat at home to Preston North End and Slade praised his team's character.

"It's a good group," Slade said. "We were too positive to be doubtful and too determined to be defeated.

"We went a goal down but that didn't affect us - we just play the way we play and if we can create chances like we have done again today we're going to score goals."

Orient's first goal came within a minute of Swindon opening the scoring through Nicky Ajose. David Mooney lifted the ball over Wesley Fotheringham for his 14th goal of the season.

"It was the perfect repsonese," Slade said. "It was a great goal - maybe we caught them [cold] because we scored it so quickly .

"It was a flick-on and then there was still a lot of work for David Mooney to do to finish it. It's a fantastic finish."

Moses Odubajo then put Orient ahead just before half-time, bundling the ball home at the back post, and within 45 seconds of the second half restarting, Odubajo scored again to make it 3-1.

"We've been on at him trying to get in at the back post more often," Slade added, "and he did that today. He's been a thorn in their side all afternoon."
