Whitelink Raiders clinch win over London Raiders

East London and West Essex Guardian Series: Whitelink Raiders too strong for London Raiders Whitelink Raiders too strong for London Raiders

Wightlink Raiders won 5-1 in Saturday’s grudge match against London Raiders at Lee Valley Ice Centre to move top of the NIHL South One table.

Danny Marshall’s London side were missing JJ McGrath, JJ Pitchley and Dwayne Newman. But this did not stop them from opening the scoring courtesy of new import Jakub Klima, a man whose prolific goalscoring and triumphant celebrations are making him popular at the Valley.

Wightlink enjoyed the lion’s share of the attacks in the second period, although none were too much for London netminder Euan King to deal with until the 39th minute, when Craig Tribe put one past him.

Player-coach Jeremy Cornish grabbed another just a minute later to make the score 2-1 to Whitelink.

Tempers boiled over between Cornish and London’s Tom Davis, but it amounted to nothing but a penalty for the Wightlink man.

London’s Dan Peters failed to snatch an equaliser, missing a clear-cut goalscoring chance. From that point on, Wightlink ran the game, creating chance after chance as they tested London’s defence.

Alex Barker scored two for the visitors and Corey Watkins made it 5-1.

This result ends London’s streak of four-point weekends, and places them fourth in the table.
