Woodford Green with Essex Ladies Athletics club came third in the men's competition at the fourth ATW Metropolitan Cross-Country League race of the season on Saturday.

The result at Perivale sees the men move up to third in the division with the season now just past its halfway point.

First in for Woodford was Pete Matthews, who has come back from a frustrating time out through injury and finished in an impressive ninth place.

Tom Phillips was the second fastest man in the team, making a fast start and holding on for 23rd before Martin Cryer crossed the line five places later in 28th.

James Stockings was the quickest Under-20 on the day and finished 30th overall and in 34th was Bertie Powell who was running his 50th consecutive Met League race over the course of the last ten years.

Kevin Murphy was Woodford's sixth runner home in 44th, coming just one place ahead of Angus Holford in 45th.

Donatas Tumaitis overcame a sore throat to finish in 60th and Jim Roche ran brilliantly for 70th.

Robbie Cox was 75th, Gareth Cavell came 86th and Darren Southcott rounded off the team's contribution in 87th.

In the Under-15/Under-17 girls race, Edie Preece put in a fine run and a strong finish to be Woodford's fastest runner in fourth, just ahead of Rosie Poole who fell away right at the end to come seventh.

Elsewhere, the first day of the South of England Indoor Championships took place at Lee Valley, on Sunday.

Robert Wolski returned to form to win the high jump with a second attempt clearance at 2.15m which was clear enough to suggest that he might have made 2.20m but with the win secured, he didn't need to jump again.

Omar Mansoor also claimed victory in the 800m with a time of 1.55.55.

Paul Scanlan, now combining the 800m with his preferred 400m, just missed out on a place in the final by 0.05 secs, as he clocked 1.59.16 to come second.

In the women's 800m final, V45 Bernadine Pritchett was also in good form and she recorded 2.23.40 secs for sixth.

It was Pritchett's quickest time over that distance since 2008.

In the men's 400m, Eugene Ayanful made the final where he finished sixth with 50.73. His performance in the semi-final, where he placed second, was close to his best ever with 50.30.
