You can only beat what is put in front of you. After all, these last three wins have come against the division’s strugglers. But, the O’s have done their job and mirroring their standout early season form reclaimed their top spot in south Cheshire at the weekend.

The question now is whether Brentford have shot their bolt after their ‘worldy’ winning run came to an end and whether we have the ‘X’ factor to finish the job off – even though we are barely halfway through January – let alone with all of 20 games remaining.

The O’s however have struck that psychological blow to their closest rivals. With the Bees slipping up – and more importantly with Wolves out of action – East London’s finest did all that was asked of them at Gresty Road.

But, it was a hard-fought victory against a Crewe side that like to get the ball down and play and if they hadn’t shocked us by taking an early lead, it was still a surprise they should go in front so soon after the break.

Orient – or rather the O’s of 2013-14 – are a different ‘animal’ to previous campaigns – so it was no surprise that they should hit back – but even the most die hard follower would have been surprised at the massive response the lads gave with Chris Dagnall scoring with all but his first touch and hitting the winner with barely his second.

Not a bad strike rate at any level – but one that could prove crucial as the goals ‘for’ continue to rack up – it could well be worth a ‘point’ at the season’s end.

Due to our non-involvement of the next round of the FA Cup this weekend, this pause – I won’t utter the word ‘break’ – will only serve to galvanise the squad and give the opportunity for valuable hours on the training pitch and ensure the lads go in to next Tuesday’s Coventry clash with very much a score to settle after the exiles inflicted our first defeat.

Coventry – who many tipped to only make the play-offs – given their ten-point season-starting deduction - have been enduring an inconsistent patch. Even though they are scoring, they do concede so with our powerful and dare I say it free-scoring frontmen then our next home clash should definitely be one to watch.

Keep the faith,

Up the O’s.
