The big question after last weekend’s Rotherham reverse is whether the O’s have the ‘X’ factor to win promotion.

Make no bones about it, the play-offs would seem second best - despite this being the start-of-season aim. But, I am sure that with a succession of home games coming up, there will be a great desire from all concerned to get back in that promotion frame.

The performance at the New York Stadium wasn’t the best this term, but once Moses Odubajo had netted after the break, there only seemed to be one winner.

But, football - as I have stated before - can kick you in the teeth - and even at this level, if you switch-off - as we fatally did - deep into stoppage - Alex Revell hurt us with his ‘worldy’ goal.

Fair play to Revell. It was a rough, tough encounter with both sides prepared to mix it - Moses getting hacked down routinely with some cynical tackling - but our former striker also receiving some of the tackling dished out by our defenders - and got booed by some of the travelling fans.

Perhaps, if we hadn’t gone for the winner right at the ‘death’ with new keeper, Ben Alnwick’s clearance not reaching its intended target and being returned into Revell’s path, then we might have been celebrating a more than useful away point against a side that should be there and thereabouts in the mix come the business end of the season.

Ifs and buts don’t win you football matches so it’s pointless dwelling on what might have been. In some ways, it’s a pity there is no midweek game this week as the players would have been keen to make amends.

But it would be interesting to see how many games this season we have turned from defeat into victory - so it would be hard to criticise the manager or the players going for broke. And - you must remember - we’re into February and we’ve only lost four games, so far.

So, what will have been a long week - as it always is in football - Peterborough are up next and would probably point to our last November London Road victory as the catalyst that started their slump. Like us, they started the season ‘on fire’ with big-money signing, Britt Assombalonga, scoring for fun.

However, it’s going to be another close call, but a game I would expect us to see out and get back in the top two again - as we do have a reasonable record at home to the Posh - although meetings between the two have been few and far between over recent years.

Keep the faith, Up the O’s.
