Two young talents blew the rest of the field away at the Essex County and Eastern AA Indoor Championships at the weekend, winning gold medals and recording some impressive personal bests.

Orion Harriers’ Megan Penfold, 12, and Woodford Green with Essex Ladies’ Katie Petyt, 13, both took home gold at the meet which doubled up for both the Essex and Eastern competitions.

Penfold, who lives in Woodford Green, picked up two Under-13 gold medals on Saturday.

The Highams Park School student won the long jump competition with a leap of 4.45m and then rushed over to the final of the 60m race, which she also won in a time of 10.14.

Penfold’s time in the final was not her fastest run of the competition however.

She crossed the line in 9.93 in her heat, which was her best run this year.

There was more medal action for Penfold the day after too as she took gold in the high jump and her top leap of 1.47m was an Under-13 record for the competition.

She completed her busy weekend by finishing second in the final of the 200m. The youngster’s time of 28.42 was a personal best.

Petyt also enjoyed a successful weekend as she won the Under-15 long jump, marking an impressive distance of 5.01m.

The Forest School student’s effort was a personal best and particularly impressive given she will also be able to compete in the age group next year.
