Schools from across Waltham Forest battled for glory at the borough finals as the basketball season came to a climax at London 2012’s Copper Box Arena.

The Olympic venue, which hosted the modern pentathlon in 2012, set the stage for eight finals with 88 teams having competed in ten different leagues since the end of October.

Some of the winners will now go through to the regional competition where they will be competing against other London borough champions for a place in the national finals.

Frederik Brema beat Chingford Foundation 46-41 to take the Under-16 boys title but Frederik Brema were on the losing side in the Under-16 girls final as they were edged out 16-12 by the Holy Family.

In the Under-15 boys competition, Chingford again lost out to Frederik Brema in a thrilling contest which was won with the last play of the game. The final score was 46-44 to Frederick Brema.

Leytonstone School were crowned champions in the Under-15 girls tournament as they beat Lamas 21-14.

Other finals took place at a variety of locations across the week as Lamas sealed a double triumph in the Under-14s, beating Chingford 26-23 in the boys tournament and Frederick Brema 21-19 in the girls.

Lamas were also victorious in the Under-13 boys where they sealed a 31-19 win over Norlington.

The Under-13 girls trophy went to Chingford who came out 20-12 winners over Heathcote.

Holy Family claimed the glory in the Under-12 boys tournament, beating Lamas 36-7 and in the Under-12 girls event, Chingford took the title with a narrow 18-16 win over Walthamstow.

Secretary for Waltham Forest School Sport, Jamie Sains, said: “This has been the best basketball season we’ve had for some time.

“We really wanted to increase participation as much as possible, particularly in the girls and we’ve done that - the numbers competing have been phenomenal.

“There were also people from three of the big local basketball teams watching the finals and looking for potential players so it’s great to be able to encourage that kind of development.”
