A pair of engaged Theydon Bois Golf Club members won the mixed pairs title at the final of the Golf Care Matchplay Championship in Dubai last week.

Peter Fitzgerald and Leah Plester took the title at the Els Club in Dubai at the UK's biggest amateur golf event.

The couple finished on 114 points after 54 holes - six under par and two points ahead of the runners-up.

Speaking after securing the title, Fitzgerald said: "It’s been our game plan right from the start to aim to get two points on each hole and give or take we’ve managed to do that. The main thing with this course is that as long as you can stay on the grass, you’ll score well."

Plester added: "We had a few missed opportunities out there but we’ve made it and are so thrilled to have won the mixed pairs title.

"The conditions here in Dubai are incredible and we would much rather play in these lovely warm and dry conditions rather than in cold, wet and windy Britain."

John Woosey, Golf Care managing director, said: "Peter and Leah coped with the pressure brilliantly. It’s not an easy course and with Sky Sport filming his every move, it was an intense environment. Everyone has had a memorable time out here and we hope it encourages more to enter next year’s event."
