Chingford Olympic hopeful Mikey Oats won his ABA quarter-final bout against Reece Oldfield at Earlsfield ABC Wandsworth at the weekend.
Oats, 15, who trains out of Repton, beat Fenland Sparta Boxing Club’s Oldfield – who proved to be tough opposition – in a unanimous decision in the 40kg category.
Father Simon said: “I’m very proud of him, of course. It has been four years since he took up boxing; his grandfather [former boxer Micky] takes him down to Repton.
“His grandfather was an inspiration of course but we went down to the gym at Waltham Forest with his brother when he was about eight and Mikey took to it like a fish to water and his brother didn’t.
“He’s had a total of 25 fights in getting this far, winning 21 with four lossess. This tournament he’s had three fights, winning each unanimously.”
The teenager is now through to the semi-finals which will be held in Bristol on Sunday, though the identity of his opponent is unconfirmed.
