Wanstead’s rising squash star Zaid Mushtaq overcame an early setback in the final of the Cumberland Club tournament to take the Under-11 title.

The 10-year-old, a product of the Dave Webster school at Connaught Squash Club in Chingford, was presented with his title by former world number ten, Zubair Khan.

Mushtaq, ten, is ranked at number 47 in England and knocked out Imran Musa 3-0 before defeating Jack Whitfield, ranked 38 in the country, 3-1.

Number one seed Hugo Andersson, ranked 25 in the world, took the first set in the final but Mushtaq fought back to win the next three sets and the final, 3-1.

Coach Webster also took a squad of Connaught Club players to the Dutch Junior Open in Amsterdam on the same weekend.

Jags Sehmbi, from Redbridge, sustained a hamstring injury but still managed a commendable 19th-place finish in the Under-19s, whilst Richard Horswill, from Ongar, finished 50th.

Tom Smith-Evans finished 42nd and Rob Pearson came 74th in the Under-17s.

Meanwhile, another Connaught Club member, 13-year-old Alice Green, has won Under-17 titles at Surrey Sports Park and Limpsfield.
