West Ham failed to lift the Schalke 04 Cup after being beaten 2-0 by Malaga CF in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.

After taking two points from their 7-6 penalty shoot-out win over host club, Schalke 04, on Saturday, the Hammers missed out on pre-season silverware in the final 24 hours later.

Arsenal loanee Carl Jenkinson made his debut, alongside 17-year-old Reece Burke but lasted only 60 minutes before being forced off the pitch with a hamstring injury.

The opening goal came from Ezequiel Rescaldani, who took advantage of the time and space afforded to him following a clearance from Aaron Cresswell to fire net in the 22nd minutes.

Two minutes later, the Spanish side went 2-0 up. Forward Luis Alberto’s shot beat Adrián at the far post after an assist from Juan Miguel Jiménez López picked him out.

It could have been three when a foul from Jenkinson resulted in a Malaga penalty. Alberto took the spot-kick but Adrian saved to keep it at 2-0.

Eight minutes after the restart, Alberto found the back of the net but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Matt Jarvis had a golden opportunity in the last few minutes of the game but was denied by keeper Carlos Kameni.
