Leyton Orient boss Russell Slade admitted it was a disappointing start to the season after his side were beaten 2-1 at home to Chesterfield.

The O's are heavily fancied to challenge for the title this season, off the back of their play-off final defeat in  May and a host of summer signings, but they were turned over by their newly-promoted opponents.

Slade, whose side won their first eight League 1 games last season, said: "We're disappointed like the fans, the players and the staff are. It's not what you want to get off to at the start of the season and you want to register some points as early as you possibly can.

"I don't think there was an awful lot in the game I have to say. We had chances in the first period and they got a very important first goal. I thought we had three chances on the back of that to get back in the game in the first half.

"We were just plugging away after that but it was only when we made the changes, with Darius Henderson making an impact after coming on, that we looked like we may get something out of it."

The hosts looked far from convincing defensively and the manager admitted he was unhappy with the goals Orient conceded.

Slade said: "They were really disappointing. It was uncharacteristic of our defending and we've got to improve in all areas. The two goals, in particular, were disappointing with hesitation for the first one and we've not had a good line for the second one when a hopeful punt forward has cost us dearly."
