Under-pressure Leyton Orient manager Russell Slade said his side let everybody down with their performance in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at home to Colchester United.

The O’s were beaten by two breakaway goals in the second-half. First, Sanchez Watt slotted past Gary Woods following an Orient corner, before Freddie Sears drove home a second after a Mathieu Baudry error.

Although Tony Humes’ side saw significantly less of the ball than the hosts, thanks chiefly to Magnus Okuonghae’s first-half red card, the U’s were the more threatening side after the break.

Reflecting on a third home League 1 fixture without victory, Slade said: “I think they let me down, I think they let themselves down and I thought they let the fans down in the second period, particularly against the ten men.”

He continued: “In the first half I thought we were by far the better team. I thought we had set ourselves up, to be honest, for the second half, I thought we could have been in front in that first period but we pressed the self-destruct button in the second half.

“Some of our defending was fairly woeful and as a group, I think we let everybody down.”

The nature of the two goals conceded was a particular source of frustration for Slade, who opined both were entirely avoidable and the fault of his side.

He fumed: “They are a counter-attack team anyway, so they have that little bit of pace on the counter-attack but you have just got to, as a group, keep that balance.

“They have not created those goals; we gifted them both of the goals and that is the disappointing side of it.

“We knew how to set up against them, we knew where they would be and we had worked on it in training but actually, we’ve switched off and we’ve lost a little bit of concentration at that particular point and they’ve gone from our corner and we’ve not dealt with it; we’ve not defended well enough to stop them going in front.”

Slade added: “There was a warning sign before they actually got their first goal and we should have heeded that warning in all honesty but we didn’t.”

The former Brighton and Hove Albion boss also revealed he had been told he had one match to “sort it out” or it would be “curtains” for him.
