Sam Allardyce felt Mo Diame’s performances in his second season at the club did not live up to those in his first ahead of the midfielder’s debut against West Ham United.

The Senegalese midfielder left Upton Park for Hull City on transfer deadline day, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, and will hope to make his Tigers’ debut on Monday night when his new side host the Hammers at the KC Stadium.

Diame, 27, joined West Ham on a free transfer in 2012 after his Wigan Athletic contract expired and made 79 appearances in all competitions for the club prior to a £3.5m switch to Hull.

The Creteil-born enforcer had made three substitute appearances in the league for West Ham this term.

Speaking to the club’s website, Allardyce responded to claims by the midfielder he should have left long before he eventually did.

The Hammers boss said: “It’s Mo’s opinion isn’t it. If Mo had continued his performances in his first year he would have continued to play in central midfield. In the end, those performances didn't live up to his first year here.

"My responsibility is the whole team, not just one player. We moved Mo around because we thought he was good enough to see if he could play in various positions. If he wasn't happy with that and he's moved on then that's fine.”

Allardyce continued: "A player picks himself, that's what a player does. And a player drops himself, they do it themselves, not me.

“When their performance drops below the expectation their position is in jeopardy, they stay in the team if their performances match or exceed my expectation."

Allardyce was also able to provide an injury update following the international break, with centre-back James Collins available once more.

Cheikhou Kouyate has not returned to the UK after representing Senegal in two games and the players who were unavailable before the two week break remain sidelined.

That means Joey O’Brien (knee), Kevin Nolan (shoulder), Matt Jarvis (thigh), Carl Jenkinson (thigh) and Andy Carroll (ankle) will all miss Monday’s clash in Humberside.

French midfielder Morgan Amalfitano and Barcelona loanee Alex Song could make their debuts for the club.

Hull City boss Steve Bruce has a considerably shorter injury list, with only Andrew Robertson (calf) doubtful and Robert Snodgrass (knee) definitely out.

Bruce could hand Hull debuts to new signings Hatem Ben Arfa, Michael Dawson and Abel Hernandez.

The Tigers sit in 11th place in the Premier League, with a win, a draw and a loss from their opening three games of their second season in the top flight.
