After squeezing past Colchester by a point last weekend, Eton Manor romped past local rivals Woodford, winning 61-14, to preserve their unbeaten start and top the London League 1 North standings.

Hosts Manor were on top from the outset - despite being without 14 first-team players - and it quickly became apparent they were comfortably the better side.

Full-back Jack Knowles almost opened the scoring early on when he raced onto Tryson Goodchild’s kick but the bounce of the ball just beat him.

Chris Jones - playing at fly-half - started the move which led to the opening try; setting up Peter Bicknell to cross the line from 15 metres before Reece Reed converted.

Jack Tovey scored Manor’s second score from ten metres and Reece converted once more to put the home side 14-0 ahead after 13 minutes.

Michael Eghan then gathered a clearance and fed Knowles, who in turn went on a darting run, making 40 metres before looking to return the ball to Knowles for what surely would have been a scoring pass, had it not been for a smart interception.

Woodford did get a try back five minutes later, profiting from a speculative kick and chase before crossing the line to halve the deficit.

Jones quickly restored Manor’s two-try lead when he stepped inside his man to cross the line; Reed keeping up his 100 per cent conversion rate.

Tovey added his second just four minutes later as relentless Manor kept up the pressure on their visitors.

Manor scored their final try before the break when Bicknell rounded his marker before out-sprinting the covering defenders to touch down.

With the conversion successful, Manor led 33-7 at half-time.

It was one-way traffic once more after the re-star; Reed jinking his way past four defenders before crossing the line just five minutes into the second period.

Mark Cuschieri - in his first appearance for the first-team in five years - broke up a rare Woodford foray forward, feeding Eghan, who displayed raw pace to sprint the length of the pitch and extend the score to 54-7.

Woodford pulled another score back from a lineout, getting their driving maul working to force their way over the line for a second try, which was converted from out wide.

A Manor penalty from their own 22 resulted in another try, Reed tapping and stepping around two attempted tackles before running the length of the pitch to add Manor’s ninth and final try in stunning fashion.

With the conversion added, the score moved up to 61-14 and although Manor threatened to run in a tenth try; sloppy play meant they were unable to further assert their superiority over Woodford.

Manor face another local derby next weekend when they travel to Barking. Bottom-of-the-league Woodford travel to Brentwood.

Chingford sit in second place at this early stage and are the only other unbeaten side after two matches.

A 22-17 home win over Barking was enough to ensure Chingford keep the pressure up on league-leaders Manor, who are ahead only by virtue of their superior points’ difference.

Chingford are on the road next weekend, with a trip to Old Priorians scheduled.

In London 3 North East, there was an opening-day win for Wanstead, who won 32-26 at Beccles.

Wanstead host Upminster next Saturday.
