Eton Manor continued their impressive start to the new season by thrashing Barking 57-13 away from home.

The home side took a 3-0 lead inside two minutes after winning a penalty inside Manor’s 22.

Barking’s lead was short-lived, though, as Manor quickly put their hosts under pressure from kick-off, forcing them to kick for touch.

After winning possession from the line-out, Manor attacked, with Michael Egan making 20 metres before offloading to Callum McKie, who cut inside his marked before drawing the final defender and passing inside for Peter Bicknell to power over the line.

The trick was repeated a handful of minutes later when Jack Tovey won the throw-in, before the ball reached Bicknell to blast through a couple of week tackles and go over for the second time.

In the 17th minute, Manor added their third try; ex-Barking man Chris Jones passing to Ben Lockyer, who in turn found Stephen Ross to run in from 30 metres and extend Manor’s lead out to 17-3.

Jack Sullivan was next to get in on the act for the away side, rolling over the line only to be penalised by the referee for double movement, which saw the score chalked off.

Manor did not have long to wait for their fourth try, though; Eghan intercepting a Barking pass before demonstrating impressive pace to sprint the length of the pitch and touch down, earning the visitors a bonus point in the process.

The home side did then pull one back, creating good overlap to score. Following the conversion, Barking then roared back into the away side’s half, converting a penalty to move within nine points of Manor at the break.

Only two second-half minutes had passed when Manor scored again, Reed spinning the ball out to Ross on wing, who in turn ghosted past his marker to score.

Reed then turned scorer, taking full advantage of the porous Barking defence to dart into a gap and, after taking a quick tap, burst past several defenders to go over the line.

Eghan further built upon the Manor lead when he received the ball from a scrum just outside the visitors’ 22. He then proceeded to race the length of the field and cross for another try.

The Manor pressure never let up and Reed soon added yet another try, using Ross as a decoy before speeding between two Barking defenders to ram home Manor’s supremacy.

Almost inevitably, Manor ran in another try soon after, Reed passing out to Eghan, who once more blitzed past the Barking defenders to score his fourth try of the afternoon.

Victory means Eton Manor are top of the London League 1 North standings ahead of next week’s visit from Old Priorians.

Woodford remain bottom-of-the-league after losing their second match of the season, falling to a 27-15 defeat at Brentwood.

The visitors opted to play against the slope in the first half and soon regretted that decision when Henry Bird burst through to open the scoring for Brentwood after just two minutes.

And that set the tone for Woodford, with Tom King scoring a converted try for the hosts to extend their lead to 12-0 after just ten minutes.

With barely 30 minutes played, Brentwood ran in their third try when Josh Woodcock and Rob Hobbs combined well to create the opportunity for Aaron Stanier to score the first of his two tries.

Despite being reduced to 13 men before half-time following yellow cards for James Metcalfe and Sean Phillips.

Woodford could not take advantage, though, and shortly after the re-start they fell further behind when Stanier cut through their defence to add his second try of the afternoon.

The away side finally got on the scoresheet following an interception, reducing the deficit to 22-10 following a penalty.

Hooker Jon Crisp got in on the act to go some way towards re-establishing Brentwood’s advantage, before Woodford scored a second consolation try in the dying minutes.

Woodford will look to get their first points on the board with a trip to second-bottom Ipswich next Saturday.
