Wapping men and ladies both played and won East League Premier Division matches on Saturday.

The men saw off title contenders Peterborough away, winning 4-2 in a pressured and challenging match.

The East London team started brightly, controlling possession in the early stages before Peterborough began applying pressure on the Wapping goal and dominating the final ten minutes of the first half. But they were unable to turn around a 1-0 deficit by the interval.

After the restart, Peterborough’s pressure resulted in an equaliser from a rebound after an excellent save by debutant goalkeeper Ben Brind. Wapping then netted two close-range goals from Mat Hyden but the advantage was soon reduced to one after a counter-attack goal from the hosts’ pacey forwards.

However, Wapping were able to calm any nerves and see the game out after a fourth goal from man-of-the-match Rob Pryce.

“There is no question that Peterborough are one of the best sides in the Premier A division and to beat them away from home is very pleasing,” coach Ryan D’Souza said.

“That said, we need to continue improving, prepare well for matches and stay mentally focused during games. If we can do that and with players still to return, we should be very positive about the season ahead.”

The ladies were also victorious, beating Tunbridge Wells 1-0 at home.

Wapping put their opponents under significant pressure from the outset but despite the score being 0-0 at half-time, the team were confident that the win was within their grasp.

It was duly secured when a short corner was slipped left to Sarah Burke, who slotted home.

“Despite not always having the structure we want, it was a much better performance today against a quality team,” coach Mark Dungey said.

“We had some good individual performances but I was most pleased by our defensive unit, they’re really starting to adjust to our new plans and work together.”
