Leyton Orient were knocked out of the FA Cup after a disappointing 1-0 first round defeat at Oldham Athletic this afternoon.

It was a fairly uneventful first half but the hosts snatched a slender lead through Mike Jones’ free-kick.

Orient had the ball in the net through Nathan Clarke in the second half but it was ruled out for a foul which left Mauro Milanese still waiting for his first win since taking charge.

The O’s made four changes from the side which drew with Coventry last weekend. Chris Dagnall was handed his first start under Milanese with striker Gianvito Plasmati injured.

Shaun Batt also came into the team with Jobi McAnuff suffering from concussion. Bradley Pritchard returned to the midfield ahead of Marvin Bartley while Shane Lowry was available following suspension to start in place of Elliot Omozusi.

The visitors created their first opportunity when Dean Cox teed up Josh Wright but the midfielder’s shot was straight at keeper Paul Rachubka.

Oldham were very quiet in the opening half hour but the hosts almost hit the target through Dominic Poleon but the striker’s shot was superbly blocked by Orient captain Clarke.

The best moment of the match nearly resulted in the opener for Orient. Batt attacked down the left and his cut back was fired towards goal by Cox but the strike was tipped over by Rachubka.

But Oldham opened the scoring with their first shot on target after 38 minutes. The O’s conceded a free-kick outside the area and Jones curled his effort into the corner past Gary Woods.

The visitors should have done better at the start of the second half from a Cox free-kick but Dagnall headed high and wide.

Oldham launched a counter-attack and had a chance themselves but Jones fired his effort over the bar.

Batt had an opportunity for the O’s but he could only fire straight at the home keeper.

Oldham were still a threat and goalscorer Jones went close again but his fierce strike flew past the post.

The visitors made their first change with Bartley thrown on in place of Batt.

Orient almost equalised when Clarke’s header was nearly turned into his own net by Genserix Kusunga but he managed to clear it off the line.

The O’s put the ball in the net soon afterwards but Clarke’s header was ruled out for a foul.

Orient made a second change late on as Gary Sawyer made his return from injury in place of Mathieu Baudry.

Milanese's side had a late chance to force a replay after a cross from Sawyer but Pritchard snatched at the effort and fired wide.

But the O's could not find an equaliser which left Orient still without a win under Milanese after three games in charge.
