Wapping moved up to second in East Premier A after a convincing 8-0 win at home to bottom side Wisbech Town.

Captain Oliver Cooper opened the scoring after ten minutes with a fine solo effort, striking fiercely into the bottom corner from the top of the D.

Wapping continued to pile on the pressure with incisive passing but a lack of care in the final third meant that not as many clear-cut opportunities were created as their good build-up play deserved.

However, two further goals did arrive before the half-time interval, with Rory Heaslip and Felix Styles each converting a short corner that the hapless Wisbech goalkeeper stood no chance of saving.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first, with Wapping controlling possession and looking for openings against an increasingly frustrated and aggressive Wisbech team.

The added composure in the final third resulted in five second-half goals: a second short corner goal for Heaslip, two further efforts for Cooper to complete his hat-trick and a brace from Matt Hyden.

Cooper said: “We played well today. It was very much a team performance and without any individual standing out or trying to do too much on his own.

“It is also pleasing to have stayed focused for the full 70 minutes.”

Wapping travel to Felixstowe this weekend in their next match.

Wapping ladies suffered a 2-1 defeat at Norwich Dragons at the weekend.

A baseline run allowed Wapping to break into the D where Kate Radford picked up the ball and scored her second goal of the season, putting the away side 1-0 ahead.

Wapping’s defensive unit were calm and collected throughout the first half, transferring the ball around the back under the pressure of Norwich’s high press.

The Dragons gained a series of short corners and put away an impressive drag flick, bringing the teams level at half-time.

The second half saw Wapping dominate most of the play by creating several promising shooting opportunities and winning short corners but they were unable to convert these into goals.

Norwich soaked up the constant pressure and two minutes before the end of the game the Dragons penetrated Wapping’s D and managed to win a short corner. This time a rebound was deflected in sealing the hosts’ victory.

Captain Lucy Todd said: “This was another impressive performance by Wapping. Every week we get stronger but unfortunately today we were unable to convert the chances we had.”

The visitors battled hard in the first half with sweeper Caroline Barr defending superbly. But the home side’s pressure told when they converted a short corner before the break.

The second half was more promising with Lizzie Matson and Amber Preston putting the pressure on the Upminster defenders.

Upminster sealed the win with their second goal and Crostyx were unlucky to be rewarded with a goal for all their efforts.
