Waltham Forest Amateur Boxing Club’s Joe Payne made quick work of stopping his latest opponent on Friday night.

Facing home fighter J Buckley at the Five Star Open Show in Harold Hill, the Forest puncher, who has been out of the ring for six months, flew out of his corner from the opening bell like a train.

Landing a string of stinging combinations from the outset, Payne chased his opponent around the ring until the referee stepped in to give Buckley a standing count.

With the bit now between his teeth, the Forest teenager continued to box on the front foot and it wasn’t long before his combinations had the Five Star boxer inspecting the officials’ fingers for a second time.

By now the referee had seen enough and stopped the bout just ahead of the close of the opening round, in the process handing the Forest fighter a TKO.

Reflecting on the victory senior coach Ken Oram said: “Joe has been working very hard in the gym and the results were clear to see.

“The combinations he threw were very powerful and he didn’t give the ref much option other than to stop the fight.”
