Leyton Orient boss Fabio Liverani has confirmed players and staff were not paid on Friday but insists it is not the norm and the investment of owner Francesco Becchetti should not be questioned.

The players and some staff did not receive their wages from February on Friday and as reported by the Guardian Series, the delay was down to a transfer in funds from a foreign bank account.

Speaking via a translator following Orient’s 2-0 win at Walsall, Liverani explained: “There has been a slight delay due to a transfer from a foreign bank account, it took a bit longer than expected.

“It is predicted by Wednesday staff and players will be paid. I think it a lot has been made of this. In Italy we get money every four months in football, so a couple of days delay is not a big problem – we understand it is something different in England.”

He continued: “This was a technical problem with a delay on an international bank transfer. Perhaps the club could have issued a statement earlier or at least informed the players and staff earlier.

“There is no concern in terms of the chairman’s investment in the club – which is huge – and we continue.

“I believe this was a one-off situation, not something which is going to be repeated again and again. It does not have to be taken as the norm for the future.”

Goalscorer Chris Dagnall added: "We came in yesterday morning and we had not been paid but they told us there and then. They said there had been a problem on their side, that we were getting paid on Wednesday and that was the end of it."
